Galyn Kyle Severe

Galyn Kyle Severe, 65, of Paul passed away Friday August 4, 2023, at home. Galyn was born in Rupert, Idaho, on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1957, to Kesl Rich and Ruth Erelana Anderson Severe. Galyn attended elementary and middle school in Rupert and graduated from Minidoka County High School in 1976. Galyn loved music and was active in the music program playing, primarily, the trumpet and French Horn, but also dabbled in other brass instruments as well. His musical preferences covered a wide spectrum, from classical pieces to the hard-core rock music of his teenage years. During High School he enjoyed all the leisure time activities of most teenaged boys, skiing at Pomerelle, chasing girls, driving his Cobra Mustang and the occasional, but appropriate party. He worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken and soon became a hit with his mother’s fellow nurses working the graveyard shift at the Rupert Hospital when he stopped by at midnight with a bucket or two of the evening’s unsold inventory. He married Deborah Johnson and they moved to Burley. Initially, Galyn worked at the 7/Eleven convenience store on Overland in Burley and he was one of those rare individuals who preferred working the night shift, so he was soon promoted to night manager. That’s where he got well acquainted with all the local police and other first responders; they now being his customers instead of the other way around. After a few years at 7/Eleven, he took over the Magic Valley Ambulance Service in Burley and the couple ran that service out of their home. His further association with the first responders of the Mini-Cassia area, together with his training in emergency medicine, fueled Galyn’s inclination toward public service and he joined the Minidoka County Sheriff’s Office Reserve program. In 1985 he decided to make law enforcement his full-time career pursuit and his subsequent dedicated service to the community spanned over 37 years. When he began his service as a Deputy Sheriff in Minidoka County, he and Debbie moved to Heyburn, but they later separated. As a Deputy, Galyn served in a number of capacities within the Sheriff’s Office. In addition to being a patrol deputy he was a member of the department’s tactical team, a Marine Deputy and dive team member, a crash reconstruction officer, the Civil Division supervisor, the go-to computer tech, and, immediately preceding his retirement, a Court Services Deputy. He also served for a time as a Deputy Coroner in Minidoka County. During these years, he met the love of his life, Bev Lallman, who served in the Communications Division of the Sheriff’s Department. Together, for the next 34 years, they loved serving the community and their close association with all of their brothers and sisters of law enforcement in the Mini-Cassia area, the Magic Valley, and beyond. They also loved attending the concerts of every cover band from the past three or four decades, numerous other musical performances, and visiting with a multitude of good friends here and abroad. Some wondered about his sanity when he wanted to make a number of extended trips to visit some Bosnian friends during the height of unrest in that part of the world, but his optimistic attitude and love for his friends overcame any concerns he might have had. It also overcame the fact that he didn’t speak any Bosnian and they didn’t speak English. During his later adult years, Galyn developed a passion for riding motorcycles and eventually ended up with his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycle that they loved to ride together. Galyn was kind, tender-hearted, and considerate although some might say he was a bit opinionated on some issues. His passion for service, his wit and his sense of humor will be sorely missed by all who knew or dealt with him. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his oldest brother Clayton (Monte) of Challis, Idaho. He is survived by his older sister, Marcia Wells (Charlie) of San Marcos, California, and older brother Randy (Kathy) of Pocatello, Idaho, as well as several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at the Paul Cemetery. There will be a gathering at 10:00 a.m. at Hansen Mortuary for a procession to the cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Hansen Mortuary.
