ALBION – Elaine Card Mahoney, 91, of Albion, passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 2, 2014, in Sandy, Utah, after a short illness.
Elaine was born on June 3, 1922, in Heyburn, Idaho, the daughter of Charles Raymond and Willie Davis Card. The family then moved to Albion, Idaho, where she grew up. Elaine graduated from the Albion State Normal School in 1942 with a Lifetime Teaching Certificate. In 1965, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Utah State University.
Elaine married Douglas S. Mahoney on Nov. 18, 1944, in Twin Falls, Idaho. After the wedding, they moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where Elaine taught school for one year while Douglas finished his enlistment in the United States Navy. The couple settled in Albion, where Douglas was a cattle rancher. Elaine taught school for 31 years in Declo and Burley. She was loved and respected by her many students. After living most of her life in Albion, Elaine moved to Burley, and then finally moved to Sandy, Utah, to be closer to family.
Elaine was a prominent figure in the community and enjoyed serving with several organizations. Her service included terms as president of the Albion 4-Leaf Clover Club, the Burley Better Homes and Garden Club, and the local chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Organization. She loved to study and teach Idaho history and enjoyed sharing her knowledge of the Gem State with her students. She felt strongly about our nation and the importance of staying politically involved. She loved to read and saw value in obtaining an education. Above all, Elaine loved to spend time with her family and watching her great-grandchildren grow and learn.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Doug; her parents; brothers, Bob and Ed Markham, and Charles (Little Buddy) Card; and sister, Mary Masterson.
Elaine is survived by her brother, Harold Card of Spokane, Wash.; her daughter and son-in-law, Merikay and Duane Thurber of South Jordan, Utah; two grandchildren, Steven (Michelle) Thurber of Farmington, Utah, and Jolynne (Dallin) Walkenhorst of South Jordan, Utah; seven great-grandchildren, Lacy, Lena, Logan, Lincoln, Larsen, Cole and one to arrive in April.
The family suggests any donations to be sent to the Albion City Library for reading and literature or the Albion Senior Citizen Center.
