MALTA - Douglas Grant Freestone, age 71, passed away at his home in Malta, Idaho, on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, as a result of an extended illness.
Doug was born on April 13, 1943, in Vernal, Utah, to Albert and May (Holfeltz) Freestone. He married Lucy Anne Covington on Sept. 1, 1961, in Vernal, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Utah LDS Temple on May 29, 1964.
He was a lifelong farmer and rancher who worked the past 38 years for Arimo Corporation in Arimo and Malta, Idaho, and Rosebud, Utah. He loved working with land and cattle and was very innovative. While working for Arimo Corporation, he designed and implemented extensive stock watering systems, covering nearly 200,000 acres of rangeland with nearly 200 miles of pipeline.
Doug had a great love for Arabian horses. He enjoyed raising and training his Arabians. He used them for ranch work and enjoyed competing in the show ring. He competed in and won many working cow horse, reining and western pleasure classes. If a person was mounted on one of Doug’s horses, they were well equipped for anything.
He enjoyed hunting, especially with his son, Doug Jr., and together they experienced many enjoyable hunting trips. The highlight of his hunting career was taking Idaho’s #2 record book antelope in 1998.
Doug enjoyed spending time with his family and also loved going to the annual family reunions to visit with extended family members.
Doug is survived by his wife, Lucy Anne Freestone of Malta; their children, Doug Freestone Jr. (NaDonna) of Malta, Idaho, Deena Williams (Layne) of Bountiful, Utah, and Wes Freestone of Pocatello, Idaho; his brothers, Lloyd Freestone (Virginia) of Grand Junction, Colo., and Robert Freestone (Pama) of Vernal, Utah; two sisters, Deon Freed of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Boneta Haslem (Bill) of St. George, Utah; 14 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and May Freestone; his son, Terry Freestone; his brother-in-law, Daniel Freed; three nephews; and two nieces.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Malta LDS Church with Bishop Richard Hall officiating. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at the Arimo Cemetery in Arimo, Idaho.
